A £30m government grant scheme that provides funding for purchases of new, smaller items of machinery and equipment will reopen in 2019, Defra has announced. The Countryside Productivity Small Grants Scheme (CPSGS) was created to help farmers invest in new equipment that will help improve efficiency. A second round of the scheme will be available from February 2019.
Helping farmers buy the equipment they need to boost productivity and increase yields, the grant’s popularity in 2018 has led to an increased budget for the next round. Defra confirmed that 3,500 grants were awarded, amounting to a total of £23.5 million, a 57% increase on the £15 million originally budgeted. Due to this strong uptake, the new budget for 2019 has been confirmed at £30 million. Farmers will be eligible for grants between £3,000 and £12,000, covering 40% (50% in Cornwall) of the purchase price for equipment.
As well as livestock equipment, the grant includes new technology items such as the new ‘Papa Pump’ hydro ram which can replace diesel and electric water pumps with zero energy costs.
As the grant was so popular in 2018, farmers are encouraged to consider acting quickly when applications open in February. In the meantime, there are few things you can prepare in advance:
Look at the previous round’s handbook to get an idea of products available and their cost
Make sure the products for which you wish to apply meet the minimum grant total
Speak to suppliers early to obtain a quote or register your interest as supply shortages in 2018 led to difficulties in receiving funding
Water Powered Technologies’ patented zero energy system pumps your water for free to help you improve profitability and productivity on your farm. You can use the Countryside Productivity Small Grants Scheme to install Papa Pump system.
Why a Papa Pump? Winner of innovation awards, the Papa Pump is a new generation of hydro rams manufactured from a very hard modern composite material and incorporates a patented new ‘venturi’ valve. This has not only enabled the Papa Pump to be smaller and lighter but also more durable and efficient than traditional metal ram pumps.
The application is online only and should take you no longer than 20 minutes to complete.
